With Valentine’s Day coming up, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about 7 ways to connect with your partner and how intimacy and communication go hand in hand.
What does communication have to do with intimacy?
One practical way to connect these is to make intimacy goals with your partner. Like the quote above, intimacy can be physical, emotional, or cognitive. Communicate about practical, attainable things that you can do to be intimate, to connect and to self-disclose.
The more couples talk about their days, share their lives with one another, and create connection, the more their intimacy and their overall relationship will improve.
- Share about your day
- This might seem simple but sitting down together and talking about your day can create small, positive connections that will allow you to feel close to one another.
- Share Your Love Story
- Chat with one another about how you met and what your first impressions were! It can be fun to bring up positive memories and maybe even come across things you didn’t know at the time. Did you have a favorite song/album you listened to together often? Recreate some old memories with music or pictures!
- Write Love Notes
- Write a love note to one another and read it out loud or exchange and read silently. Doing this while making eye contact will add another level connection with your partner.
- Have a Scree-Free Date Night in
- Plan together, cook together, find a board game or another way to spend your time other than with the TV.
- Have a “Bed Day”
- If you do not have kids or if you can find a sitter for them for an overnight stay, have a bed day. Plan the day before to NOT get out of bed at all. Move the microwave in the room, ice chest, or whatever you need to stay in bed all day. Watch movies, have sex, nap, play video games, snack, or talk. Make a commitment to staying off your phone and staying in bed all day other than to use the restroom.
- Take notes about each other
- Ask or re-ask your partner about all their favorite things. Keep track of them in the NOTES section on your phone or write it down somewhere where you might see it often. Favorite Candy Bar? Favorite Snack? Favorite movie? Favorite Flower? Favorite meal? Favorite takeout? Favorite Game? Write down as many as you can think of and keep it close to use to surprise your partner at a different time.
- Share your wants/hopes/dreams
- Share with one another something that you want. This can be for the future, something simple, a huge dream, trying something new in bed, a new restaurant to order takeout from… share a few things with one another and respond with excitement. Make a simple plan of action to get everyone’s wants acknowledged or accomplished!
